The International Law of Non-International Armed Conflict is a new book by one of our co-editors, Ezequiel Heffes, and Nathalie Weizmann, published by Oxford University Press.
As most contemporary armed conflicts are non-international – involving organized non-State armed groups either fighting between themselves or against State armed forces – the book provides a comprehensive and practical examination of how international law regulates the parties’ conduct in order to minimize human suffering and preserve dignity.
The book examines the application of international humanitarian law and international human rights law across different dimensions of non-international armed conflict: the beginning and end of conflict, the regulation of tactics and weapons, the protection of persons living under the control of a party to the conflict, and the deprivation of liberty and related judicial guarantees and procedural safeguards. It addresses contemporary challenges, such as counter-terrorism operations, the protection of the natural environment, and the use of new technologies.
The book also explores how compliance with international humanitarian law can be strengthened and how accountability for serious violations is pursued under international criminal law, State responsibility, and corporate responsibility.
